Medicinal Plant Garden Committee

To impart basic knowledge of medicinal plants, a herbal garden containing plants of folklore and medicinal importance is established in Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Pharmaceutical Science, Guwahati campus in the year 2007 with an adequate area of plant occupying around 1400 square feet in greenhouse shading and surrounded by concrete boundary. This medicinal plant garden is currently having around 84 kinds of medicinal plants and all are tagged with their scientific names. Medicinal plant garden committee comprises of the following members looking after different related issues. 

  1. Mr. Ratul Das, President SSA, Chairperson and Financial Advisor
  2. Prof. (Dr.) P. Malairajan, Principal GIPS, Secretary cum Administrator
  3. Dr. Trishna Das, Assistant Professor, Garden Coordinator
  4. Dr. Damiki Laloo, Associate Professor, Garden Co-Coordinator
  5. Mr. Biren Kalita, Non-teaching staff, Gardener
  6. Representative of students member.

Functioning of the committee:

  1. The secretary of the committee will be functioning as the overall head of the planning and implementation of the gardening and beautification activities of the campus.
  2. The garden coordinator will be responsible for the timely conduct of meetings to discuss the overall improvement of the garden. However, in absence of the garden coordinator, Secretary will nominate the next committee member to serve the functions of the coordinator.
  3. The garden coordinator will communicate from time to time with the secretary and perform the assigned functions.
  4. The committee shall elect from their number of members to serve as Chairman, Secretary and garden coordinator.
  5. A casual vacancy in the committee member may be filled by the committee.
  6. The committee may co-opt other persons to aid in gardening and beautification activity.
  7. The committee may promulgate rules to the usage of medicinal plants or their parts available in the garden.

Objective of MPG:

  1. Promotion of cultivation and conservation of Medicinal Plants.
  2. To develop cultivation techniques (agro-techniques) including Quality Plant Materials.
  3. Cultivation of some medicinal plants which fair well only in the forest ecosystem as inter-cropping in and around the forest areas. 
  4.   To create optimum awareness and interest amongst the common people about medicinal plants 
  5.  To conserve the biodiversity of medicinal plants of Assam.
  6.  To introduce the cultivation of more and more exotic medicinal plants.
  7.  To strengthen the educational system and research on Medicinal Plants inside the Institution.
  8. To undertake Researches on the development and formulation of herbal drugs in close collaboration with Universities, Research Institutions and industries. 
  9. To increase public awareness about the efficacies of herbal drugs.
